  • Can ASGA help us open our own banking account for our SGA?

Our SGA is looking into opening up its own bank account. Because we are a part of ASGA, do you know if our local chapter could use the national groups’ EIN to open up a local bank account or is there another avenue for AUIE SGA to obtain an EIN? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • Can SGs take financial donations directly? 1 of 2 responses

I have a fundraising legal question. The situation is this: Our SG recieves and manages student fees from the College each semester. The money is all held by the College, but in a specific account within the College. We manage the funds of all student organizations, many of whom do fundraising of some sort. One in particular raises between $2-5k each semester, including some donations of a few hundred dollars each. Sometimes these go through the College's Advancement office, (which is not separate from the College legally), sometimes the donations will come through us. As this really applies to all student groups fundraising, I've become concerned about some flack I'm getting from the College telling me that they will not provide receipts for donations restricted to SG/student organizations, because such entities "do not really exist" as far as the College is concerned. However, if a donation came in restricted to the Biology department, that would be okay because it is a "real department" of the College. Having worked in a college foundation before, dealing with a number of restricted gifts, I find the College's refusal to assist our student groups by recognizing donations/donors disrespectful in the extreme. I was hoping that perhaps members of the panel could provide me with specific legal or procedural guides or documents (i.e., sample restricted gifts policy) to handling restricted gifts to student organizations and/or Student Governments in a 501(c)3 College.

  • Do student groups getting money from SG already have a budget or is SG the sole provider of their yearly budget?

This year, our SGA has started to give money to other student organizations. From what I understand this is common practice with most SGA's. I  was just wondering if the student organizations that receive money from SGA's already have a budget to work with or if SGA was the sole provider of their yearly budget.
