Advice for new presidents

I've been just elected student body president of a private business school in Dallas, Texas. I do not know where to start. Effective student leadership is evidently needed at this school. Former leaders did not do anything that I can look at. Please help me!

I am the SGA advisor for a branch campus of a larger university. This semester, there has been a push by the President and the Office of Student Affairs to:

1. To forcibly combine the main campus SGA with our SGA.
2. Appoint the advisor from student affairs. (note, the SGA advisor on our main campus is the Assoc. Dean for Student Affairs and is appointed. On our campus, the advisor is nominated and serves at the will of the elected SGA.).

One argument that is being made is that "most SGA advisors" are appointed officers of the University. My question is do you have any data to confirm or refute this statement?
